Notes

How teacher prepares for new year

  • Content split by odd-even years

  • Plans for math literacy science

  • No plans for digital technologies

  • Digital tech slideshow - links to code.org course, common sense media

    • Told to use their resources

    • More confident Digital citizenship over coding

Preparing content for a maths class

  • Follow the book through for maths as the plan

  • iUgo - online planning platform

    • Enter in things like key competencies

    • What is a target student?

      • Students who are a priority to focus on - at risk students(ethnicity, socioeconomic level, learning disabilities, struggling) - priority students in education-speak

    • Groups - can segment students by skill

    • Sequential plan or unit plan

  • About to change to something else for planning

Requirements before school year starts

  • 3 weeks in you'll be expected to hand in your planning

  • Regular meetings about what you're planning to do

  • Running records with them - competency checking - ask them questions - identify comprehension and fluency with language - numeracy

  • Getting to know them in the first month

What does a plan look like?

  • Could be a word document

    • Unit title, theme

    • Values for the term

    • Key competencies

    • Achievement objectives

    • Success criteria

    • Resources needed - this will be threaded throughout the plan

    • Week 1 coverage, week 2 coverage, etc etc etc

    • WALT - we are learning to

    • Tumble - different groups

      • What to do next, independently going through the next group

      • "tumbling through the challenges"

  • Old school manager, but happy with whatever,

  • Hand it in on a shared school drive

  • iUgo

  • Differentiation between different students

Process for bringing in an assembly speaker?

  • Tell team lead

  • Book assembly

  • Tell students

  • Do the thing

Last time you brought in a speaker

  • Policeman

  • Someone to talk about road safety

  • Travelwise

  • How to hop on a bus?

  • Not a full school assembly

  • Usually included as part of a normal assembly

  • Usually as a slot in the assembly

  • Monday morning assembly

  • Last thing Friday afternoon

last time you had a classroom volunteer?

  • no classroom volunteers

  • If i need help I’ll get someone internal

Experience in First year teaching

  • Lots of fun

  • Good colleagues

  • Reflections difficult

  • "Critically reflecting on practice"

  • How did you find the role

    • Advertised on education gazette

    • Word of mouth

Pain points

  • Knowing that you're doing a good job with work life balance

  • Expectation setting

    • The amount of Professional Development clahses with work requirements

    • Meeting with students parents because their child is misbehaving

    • Helping a different teacher with tech

    • Lots of small things that get in the way of BAU (marking, etc)

    • Dropped marking

    • Nobody does the marking for weeks

    • Stuff is unmarked

    • A lot of it is peer marked / self marked

  • I always work through lunch

  • I only break during shared morning tea on Wednesday mornings

  • A lot of random shit that wont get done unless I do it

What support do I get when teaching something new?

  • Now teaching art and Maori

  • Taking on a few more subjects

  • Results in more planning

  • More things to write in reports

  • Working with year 7s and 8s

  • Meet team lead every week

    • Ie: im crap at swimming how do I teach swimming

    • Would usually do observations - observe another teaching teaching swimming

  • At year  7/8 it’s a lot about peer approval

Day in the life

  • Arrive 7:30am

  • Make sure class is ready - printing, emailing, finding resources

  • Review timetable

  • Tidying, cleaning classroom

  • Borrowing resources from other teachers occasionally

  • Morning admin

  • 8:15-8:30 staff meeting

  • Other stuff and notices

  • 8:30 head back to classroom

  • Asking how they are if they were absent

  • Reminding them to do shit, collecting money if needed for projects

  • Take roll

  • 8:40-9:10 Devotions

  • First lesson varies

  • Writing or reading

  • Friday is homework marking

  • 10:00 10:50 - Second period is always maths

  • Morning tea - first break of the day

    • Laminating things, eat/drink

    • More admin, emailing parents

  • 11:15 - student return

  • Begin subjects - double period of something

  • Planning is difficult at this end

  • Keeping them entertained or engaged for this long is difficult

  • Lunchtime 12:50 - 1:40

    • More admin, or duty - half of a lunchtime

  • Duty 2-3 times a week until 1:15

  • Last period of the day 1:40 - 3:10

  • Usually finish up by 3 to have enough time to remind them what to bring the next day

  • Tidy up resources, admin etc

  • After school duty 3:00 - 3:30 traffic duty

  • If professional development is planned its from 3:30 - late

  • Sometimes til 6

 Professional development

  • ZOOMed in

  • Digital technology pd

  • Super basic, really painful

  • High school teachers were made to be there but it sucked

  • Farm animals coding scratch

  • Told to go home and try it herself -

  • Frustratingly basic - didn’t find it useful

  • Boring

  • Not at her level - too simple

  • Half an hour session, but the fact that it was paid for and mandatory

  • The teachers didn’t ask for it

  • Everyone was just working on their laptops on other work, mentally absent

  • Would be more helpful if someone in the school was given release / relief to do professional development with someone better then to teach it to the rest of the school

Tell me about the reporting

  • Term 2 and term 4 need to have finished reports

  • Only report every half term

  • Half to throughout the year

  • Different assessments

    • Chanel spelling tests

    • PISA - no PISA testing

  • Success criteria - student should present a well informed speech in marine conservation

  • Metrics quite flexible at intermediate

  • Assessments may be standardized across classes by year level

  • KMAR for reporting

    • Report role

    • Incidents

    • Access student information, ie: address, contact details, parent contact info

    • Maths, english, social science, science, reading, writing

    • Digital tech, religious students, typing arent logged in the system

      • Only mentioned in general comment

Sharing content

  • Teachers plan together

  • She will make things, some games, etc

  • Once the topic is finished it goes into a box

    • Ie: a box marked plants

Booking out the hall

  • Weekly library

  • Library

  • PE
